Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in a move for Athletic Club defender Unai Nunez, according to reports.

The Bilbao defender, who has one cap for Spain, has been linked with a host of clubs across Europe this summer as he continues to avoid signing a new contract at San Mames.

Now, according to The Times, Wolves are considering making a bid for the player, who has a £27 million release clause in his current deal with the Basque club.

This follows another report from CaughtOffside claiming the same scenario earlier this week. They reported that there has not yet been an official approach for the player, but that Athletic would not be willing to negotiate his fee and Wolves would have to pay the full £27m clause.

Wolves currently have captain Conor Coady, Willy Boly, Romain Saiss, and Leander Dendoncker as their main central defensive options but could use extra cover in the position. Youngster Max Kilman is another option but Wolves loaned out Ryan Bennett to Leicester City for the second half of last season.

Wolves eventually found themselves coming up short with their squad depth toward the end of the season, as they battled for Premier League and Europa League success.

Many fans would like to see Wolves invest in making the squad bigger to sustain their excellent form and recent progression under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Nunez would undoubtedly be an excellent addition to the Wolves first-team squad, although, at the current asking price, he might be considered too expensive in the current climate.
