A report from The Athletic has shared what Eddie Howe told Matt Targett in a meeting on Friday, with the Newcastle United loanee learning that the club are yet to make a decision on whether to keep him.
Targett is one of the players who joined Newcastle during the January transfer window. And he more than played his part as Eddie Howe’s men comfortably pulled clear of the relegation battle in the Premier League.

However, his future is uncertain. The Athletic notes that Newcastle have an agreement in place that will allow them to sign the 26-year-old permanently for around £15 million.
But despite playing 16 times in the top-flight, the Magpies are considering other options. The Athletic suggests that they are looking at more attacking full-backs.

And with that, Howe met with Targett on Friday. And The Athletic reports that he informed the Aston Villa loanee that Newcastle are yet to make a decision on his future.
What Eddie Howe told Matt Targett
Targett could certainly be a smart signing for Newcastle. But the Magpies have the means to sign some outstanding players over the coming months.
They have the deal in place for Targett. So it makes sense that they are keeping their options before they give the go-ahead to the deal for the Villa star.
Howe labelled him ‘fantastic‘ when the former Southampton man sealed the move to St James’ Park. And his form since is unlikely to have done anything to change his opinion.
But he has provided one assist in 33 Premier League games this past season. So you can also see why Newcastle may feel that someone else may be needed if they want a player to make more of a contribution in the final third.
