Report: What Chris Wood has been saying privately at Newcastle as club consider which players to sell in January

Chris Wood looks set to remain at Newcastle United beyond the end of the January transfer window and is happy with his role.

Wood signed for the Magpies during the winter window this year at a time when they were desperate for a new striker in the relegation battle.

He came in from Burnley, helped ensure survival but Callum Wilson is back fit now and Alexander Isak has since joined the club too.

The Telegraph report that Newcastle are considering which fringe players to sell but they want to keep Wood and he is happy to stay.

Wood happy at Newcastle

The report says that behind the scenes at Newcastle, Wood has been saying he is happy and settled on Tyneside after moving from Burnley.

He is a popular member of the dressing room and wants to remain part of what Eddie Howe is building at the club.

Wood has had to get used to being first choice for Burnley to being a squad player but it is an exciting time for the Magpies and not everyone can start every single game.

At the end of the summer transfer window, it was reported that a host of Premier League clubs tried to sign Wood, but Newcastle said no.

Isak’s injury issues probably mean that Wood is more important than he might ordinarily be and Wilson’s fitness struggles down the years mean an experienced backup is important.

It remains to be seen how big Newcastle go in January, with a real opportunity to push on and finish in the top four now in their hands.
