In fact, the report suggests that he could be in place by the end of the week. Much of his coaching team at Ibrox are expected to follow him to the Premier League.

And it seems that appointing Gerrard is set to be a popular move amongst the Villa squad.

The Daily Mail reports that the senior members of the side are excited about the prospect of the 41-year-old coming in – despite the popularity that Smith enjoyed amongst the team.

That will clearly be a big boost for Gerrard, should he take the opportunity.

Rangers face huge task replacing Gerrard as Aston Villa move seemingly nears

Of course, some Gers fans will hold out some hope that Gerrard could yet stay.

But as things stand, it does appear that the smart money would suggest that the Englishman is Villa Park-bound.

And with that, Rangers may now need to work out who will take them forward. Replacing Gerrard is clearly not going to be an easy task.

Celtic are improving under Ange Postecoglou. So it is imperative that the Light Blues get the next appointment correct.

It will be fascinating to see which direction they now go in with Gerrard seemingly tempted by another opportunity.
