The Guardian have claimed that West Ham United are worried about failing to sign Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes having been linked with the Portuguese star for the majority of the window – because he has been offered to rivals Tottenham.
Fernandes, 20, has been linked with West Ham and it is believed the Hammers have already made an offer for the Portugal Under-21 international – which was turned down. West Ham have launched a new bid, an 18-month loan bid for Fernandes.
But Fernandes, who is now being represented by Portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes, could now be targeted by Tottenham. That is because Mendes has offered Fernandes to Spurs – given the closeness between Mendes and Jose Mourinho.
Moussa Sissoko has been ruled out until April with a knee injury, prompting Spurs to consider bringing in a midfielder on loan. Now, Fernandes could be that man after being offered to Spurs, and West Ham are fearing they may lose out.

TBR’s view – Fernandes would be better advised to join West Ham
Yes, at Tottenham, he would be joining a bigger club. But at West Ham, Fernandes would have much more chance to shine and get game time due to a lack of options in the middle of the park.
West Ham only have Declan Rice and Mark Noble as options. Jack Wilshere is injured and Carlos Sanchez is nowhere near good enough, while Josh Cullen is on loan at Charlton. At Spurs, though, Fernandes would have much more competition.
Indeed, Tanguy Ndombele, Eric Dier, Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp, Giovani Lo Celso, Christian Eriksen and Victor Wanyama are vying for a place in the side – and that is without Sissoko. Fernandes would be best to move to West Ham.
