Report: West Ham want £7.25m-rated Liverpool goalkeeper

West Ham United have emerged as surprise frontrunners to sign Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius during the summer transfer window, according to Turkish outlet Fanatik.

The German goalkeeper has spent the last two seasons on loan at Besiktas but their financial predicament means they are unlikely to sign him on a permanent transfer.

Liverpool want to recoup £7.25 million for the goalkeeper and that would represent a price well within West Ham’s summer transfer kitty.

It would perhaps be a surprise if David Moyes opted to sign another goalkeeper. Lukasz Fabianksi is comfortably the first choice, with Darren Randolph returning to the club as back up in January.

Karius was loaned out by Liverpool after the Champions League final at the end of the 2017/18 campaign.

The Reds were beaten by 3-1 by Real Madrid with the 26-year-old at fault for two of the goals scored by Los Blancos.

Karius has set about rebuilding his career at Besiktas and in the summer he will surely embark on the next chapter.

He has played 67 games for the Turkish side and just being a number one goalkeeper for two seasons should have done his confidence the world of good.

Having spent time playing regular football, he will want his next move to follow a similar pattern.

With that in mind, West Ham might not be the most ideal next move for the stopper; unless the Hammers had any plans to offload one of their current goalkeepers.

Affordable

It would all depend just how desperate Karius is to prove himself in the Premier League all over again.

He might relish the challenge of toppling Fabianksi from the No.1 spot and it’ll be interesting to see whether West Ham appeal to him.

The fee of £7.25 million would hardly break the bank. His salary of £25,000-a-week also makes him an affordable option on the West Ham payroll.

Given his calamitous last few games in the Liverpool side, the custodian still has plenty to prove.

If Moyes can get him back into form then he might be a shrewd signing given the finances; although it does remain a big if at this stage.
