The Daily Star have claimed in Sunday’s paper edition (back page, April 12) that West Ham United and David Moyes are keen to raid London rivals Tottenham Hotspur for versatile England international Eric Dier this summer.
Dier, 26, has been in and out of the Spurs side this season. Indeed, the former Everton and Sporting Lisbon star has managed just 25 appearances in all competitions – with Dier seemingly being given more of a chance under Jose Mourinho.
However, the Cheltenham-born star is set to enter the final 12 months of his current contract and that is likely to see suitors become interested in his signature. Moyes is clearly an admirer of Dier, and wants West Ham to raid rivals Spurs for the player.
Indeed, Moyes signed Dier for Everton on loan in January 2011 – where he remained for 18 months without making a single senior appearance, though he was only 18. Moyes was quoted by the Echo as saying he wanted to keep him at Everton.
“We wanted him to stay with us. We knew he wanted to be in the first team, even though there would be little chance. Maybe Ricardo Sa Pinto (the Sporting coach) and Sporting have other plans for him,” Moyes said, back in 2012.
TBR’s view – Dier would be the ideal signing for West Ham
That is because the Hammers need a central defender, and cover in the middle of the park. Issa Diop’s future is up for debate, with the player being linked with a number of Premier League heavyweights.
Fabian Balbuena and Angelo Ogbonna are West Ham’s only options, and it is a similar story in midfield. With Jack Wilshere constantly injured and Carlos Sanchez way below the quality required, a midfielder is needed.
Dier, a £4million (ESPN) signing from Sporting Lisbon, would be ideal for West Ham.
