Report: West Ham to sign 20-year-old, after Rangers exit

The Express claim that West Ham are set to complete the signing of free agent Brian Kinnear – after the goalkeeper was released by Rangers. Kinnear, a two-time Scotland Under-21 international, leaves Ibrox after failing to break into the senior side. He will now join the Hammers.

West Ham are certainly in need of options between the sticks. Nathan Trott has moved to France to join second-tier outfit Nancy on loan. The two first-team options in Lukasz Fabianski and Darren Randolph have a combined age of 70. Fabianski is now 36, and Ireland ace Randolph is 34.

The Hammers are looking to improve their goalkeeping area, as well as adding depth. Kinnear looks as though he could come in as a third-choice option. Meanwhile, David Moyes also remains keen on England international Sam Johnstone – as per the Express.

Rangers spell should not dictate what West Ham fans think of Kinnear

No, the Scotland youth international did not get to play for Rangers. But during Steven Gerrard’s reign, only a select few of young players have broken in. The most successful of those, is probably Glenn Middleton – and he himself has been loaned out in the past 12 months.

Rangers boast Allan McGregor, an Ibrox legend and Scotland international Jon McLaughlin as his back-up. Ex-Reds academy goalkeeper Andy Firth is the club’s third-choice option. It was always going to be impossible for Kinnear to break in.
