Report: West Ham taking time in talks with PSG, club know they are in 'strong position' to sign 28-year-old

French website RMC Sport claim that West Ham are pursposely taking time in talks to sign Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. The France international was one of a handful of players to shine for Fulham last season. The report claims West Ham are in a ‘position of strength’.

Areola, 28, was excellent for Fulham last season. Joining the club on loan from PSG for the season, having been on loan at Real Madrid the season before that, Areola produced heroics throughout. In 36 Premier League games, he kept nine clean sheets and only conceded 48 goals.

A very strong record for a goalkeeper that had been relegated. Sam Johnstone, at West Brom, conceding 74 in 37 – keeping six clean sheets. Little surprise that West Ham want to sign him, then. GFFN recently reported that West Ham are to strike a loan-to-buy deal worth £13million.

But a new report from RMC claims West Ham are taking their time in negotiations to sign World Cup winner Areola. The Hammers are said to know that they are in a ‘position of strength’ – because they are the only club showing interest in the PSG stopper. That is, as things stand.

Areola a no-brainer for West Ham at £13m

West Ham need a goalkeeper. Lukasz Fabianski is 36 and hardly enjoyed his best season during 2020-21. Darren Randolph is back-up, while Nathan Trott has joined Nancy on loan. If the Hammers, though, are going to make a run of it in Europe and aim for the top six – improvement is crucial.

Getting a new goalkeeper in is integral. Randolph will surely be happy as third-choice, while there are likely to be suitors in the Championship if Areola does sign. Fabianski would probably be happy to just play in Europe. Areola would be a stunning signing, and a bargain at £13million.
