West Ham United will now have to pay over £20 million if they hope to sign Sander Berge during the final days of the January transfer window, according to a report from the Sunday People (26/1; page 49).

Hammers fans will be hoping that the club enjoy a busy few days at the end of the month. David Moyes’s men have lost three of their last four games, and they have registered one Premier League win since the Scot’s return.

The Irons are now out of the FA Cup and sit one place above the relegation zone in the top flight. It is only goal difference that keeps them out of the bottom three.

Berge has caught the eye with some superb performances this season. He has scored four league goals from holding midfield, while he has also played six times in the Champions League.

However, the Hammers have seemingly cost themselves by not moving for the 21-year-old earlier in the month.

The Sunday People suggested that he will now cost over £20 million with the deadline looming.

TBR View – West Ham need statement signing

The new manager bounce did not last long at all under Moyes. And the Hammers look set to be right in the relegation mix during the remaining months of the season.

A marquee January signing could make a difference. And Berge would arguably be a very exciting addition having impressed in the Champions League this term.

Hammers fans would be forgiven for feeling that their problems will not be addressed with one or two good signings.

But bringing a player like Berge in would arguably provide a boost that Moyes’s men appear to desperately need.
