West Ham United have joined Aston Villa in the race to sign Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek on loan this summer, according to a report from the Guardian.
The Hammers are still looking to add their first new face during the window. And the urgency for new signings has only increased with the club losing their opening two Premier League games.
The Daily Mail reported on Wednesday that the Villans want the 24-year-old on loan. But Dean Smith’s side are not going to have a free run at landing his signature.
According to the Guardian, the Irons also want Loftus-Cheek for the season.
The England international has been more of a peripheral figure for the Blues this term. So perhaps, it should not be a big surprise if he does secure a move away before the deadline passes.
And for West Ham, it would arguably be a good piece of business. He is a player who should be coming into his peak in the coming years.
Of course, a loan is not ideal. But there would surely be plenty of Hammers supporters who would rather see the club land Loftus-Cheek on loan than make no additions in the middle of the park.
And if Chelsea are not going to use the academy graduate – who earns £60,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – regularly, then perhaps a loan may be the best option for them.
He clearly has the talent to be an outstanding player in the future. But he can surely not afford to not be playing regularly at this stage of his career.
