According to a report from CalcioMercato, West Ham United are pushing to sign Fiorentina star Nikola Milenkovic in the January transfer window.

The Irons have been looking for a new centre-half even after the acquisition of Kurt Zouma in the summer. David Moyes seems desperate for another man at the back, and that need has increased following Angelo Ogbonna’s injury.

The Italian may not play again for the Hammers this season after suffering an ACL injury against Liverpool last weekend. He has been a rock for them since the start of the campaign, and the Irons will really miss him.

West Ham still have Issa Diop and Craig Dawson to step in alongside Zouma at the back, but it looks like Moyes wants another one. Milenkovic has been his preferred target for a while now.

West Ham want Milenkovic again

West Ham have been linked with a move for Milenkovic for about a year now. David Moyes’ side had a £20 million bid rejected for the defender in the 2020 summer transfer window (Mail), but they have been pursuing him ever since.

It seems clear that Milenkovic is Moyes’ number one defensive target and Ogbonna’s injury may just have made the Serbian a priority in the January transfer window.

However, CalcioMercato claim this week that Fiorentina consider him ‘untransferable’. The report says there’s no way La Viola will allow him to leave in the January transfer window, which complicates things for the Hammers.

The new Nemanja Vidic

Milenkovic has been dubbed as the new Nemanja Vidic, mainly because they share the same nationality and play in the same position. However, under the right manager, he can reach the heights that the ex-Manchester United skipper did in his prime.

Moyes could well be that man. The Irons boss has drastically improved so many players at West Ham over the last 18 months and Milenkovic, if he comes in, could also fulfil the massive potential he possesses.

Standing at 6ft 5in tall, the Serbian would have no problems adjusting to the physicality of the Premier League. He is fantastic in the air, good with the ball at his feet and most importantly, he can defend.

Milenkovic would be a brilliant signing for the Hammers in January, but Fiorentina will not make it easy for them to sign him.
