Report: West Ham offer contract to striker Olivier Giroud
West Ham United have made an offer to Olivier Giroud in a late attempt to scupper AC Milan’s hopes of signing the striker, according to a report from Calciomercato.
Giroud is currently set to become a free agent. His contract with Chelsea – worth £110,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – expires this summer.
He turns 35 in September. However, some of his performances this past season have highlighted that he still has plenty to offer at the highest level.
The Frenchman scored six times in eight Champions League appearances as Thomas Tuchel’s men went on to lift the trophy.
He also scored four times in the top flight. So it is little surprise that a number of sides have made a move for Giroud.
According to Calciomercato, he is edging closer to a move to San Siro. In fact, it is claimed that he is now looking for a house in Milan.
However, with a deal yet to be completed, a couple of sides are looking to step in. And according to Calciomercato, one of those to have made a contract offer is West Ham.
Meanwhile, New York City FC have also reportedly made an offer.
It does appear that the Hammers only have a slim chance of a deal. But perhaps they may hold out some hope while his move to the Rossoneri is not finalised.
Giroud would be fantastic striker signing for West Ham
Unfortunately, West Ham may well end up missing out on a move for Giroud.
He would have arguably been an excellent addition to David Moyes’s ranks this summer. He is a player who has previously been on their radar.
Of course, he is now into the twilight of his career. But as previously mentioned, he continues to score goals at the top level.
On a free transfer therefore, he could have potentially been an outstanding signing ahead of West Ham’s Europa League campaign.
It would seem that they are set to miss out. But you could understand if there were plenty of West Ham fans hoping for a late twist in the tale.
