West Ham United target Jesse Lingard has rejected a new contract with Manchester United, according to the BBC.

The attacker’s current deal is set to expire at the end of this season. Lingard has been with the Red Devils since he was seven and progressed all the way to the senior side.

However, first-team appearances have been hard to come by in recent campaigns. He spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham, where he shone.

Lingard scored nine times in 16 appearances to help the Hammers qualify for the Europa League.

He was a transfer target for the club during last summer’s transfer window, and was valued at £30m by the northerners. But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to keep him at Old Trafford.

It remains to be seen whether the club will go back in for the ace if he leaves on a free next summer.

Signing Lingard on a free is a no-brainer

Signing Lingard on a free transfer is a no-brainer for West Ham amid news he has rejected a new contract.

The arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo has definitely helped David Moyes in his pursuit of the 28-year-old.

If Lingard was to leave at the end of the campaign, you would imagine the east Londoners are at the front of the queue for his signature.

His success at the London Stadium and build-up of relationships with the squad are a massive help.

Even though Nikola Vlasic joined from CSKA Moscow, there is still space in the squad.

Manuel Lanzini was transfer-listed by the club and should depart in the near future.

That would open up a slot for Lingard to join West Ham as a potential replacement.
