The 21-year-old has been excellent for the Bundesliga side, who, according to 90min, are looking to spark a bidding war to ease some of their financial concerns.

90min reports that Southampton led the way for a move for McKennie. But they have since been joined in the running by Everton, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and the Hammers.

Liverpool are also said to be admirers. However, the Reds are not planning to make a move this summer.

The report notes that McKennie – who is keen on moving to the Premier League – could be available for £22.5 million.

TBR View: West Ham would make big statement should they land McKennie

West Ham were strong in the middle of the park last season. Declan Rice and Mark Noble continue to boast an impressive partnership. Meanwhile, Tomas Soucek proved to be an inspired signing.

But they arguably need greater depth in that area of the field. And for that reason, McKennie could be an outstanding addition to David Moyes’s ranks.

He offers versatility and works incredibly hard. So it would be a brilliant piece of business if West Ham were able to land the youngster this summer.
