Report: West Ham interested in Jason Denayer before Dubai move

West Ham were interested in a deal for Jason Denayer before the defender opted to join Shabab Al Ahli, according to a report from 90min.

Of course, it was a turbulent window for David Moyes on the defensive front. The Hammers signed Nayef Aguerd from Rennes.

Unfortunately, Aguerd is still awaiting his competitive debut for the Irons after sustaining a serious injury in pre-season. And that prompted West Ham to sign Thilo Kehrer from Paris Saint-Germain.

But there was another Ligue 1 defender on their radar, it seems. According to 90min, West Ham were one of the Premier League sides keen on Denayer following his departure from Lyon.

The report suggests that Leicester, Bournemouth and Wolves also looked at the former Manchester City man, with the latter holding talks about a potential deal.

However, Denayer has opted to move to Dubai and join Shabab Al Ahli.

West Ham interested in Denayer

Of course, Denayer would have been a worthwhile signing for the Irons had they brought him to the London Stadium.

At 27, he should be at his peak. He has made 35 appearances for Belgium and featured in the Champions League.

He is also someone David Moyes knows well. The Scot was in charge of the centre-back while he was on loan with Sunderland during the 2016/17 season. And he praised the defender for being ‘very quick‘.

Obviously, that proved to be a disappointing campaign for the Black Cats. But Denayer will have improved significantly since then.

And West Ham would have benefitted from having the extra depth as they battle on four fronts this season.

It is not clear how seriously West Ham were interested in the defender. But it appears that he is headed elsewhere.
