Italian outlet CalcioMercato have claimed that West Ham United have been in talks with AC Milan star Hakan Calhanoglu’s representatives ahead of a potential summer switch to east London.
The 25-year-old has struggled at Milan, failing to live up to expectation after breaking onto the scene with Bayer Leverkusen. He has scored 10 goals in 88 games, but laid on an impressive 26 assists in that time.
Milan want to get rid of the 41-time Turkey international, though. That is because Leonardo wants to bring in some new talent this summer, but Milan need to adhere to Financial Fairplay rules and that means selling some players.
West Ham, Leicester City and Fenerbahce are all interested, but the Hammers are in pole position to land the playmaker after making contract with the midfielder’s agents.
It is believed that Calhanoglu is worth a whopping £26million and will only leave for a figure close to that asking price. The Hammers certainly showed they can spend that kind of cash last summer, with Felipe Anderson.
The Hammers could do with additions in attacking midfield. Jack Wilshere has spent almost the entire campaign out injured, while Samir Nasri looks set to leave after only being given a deal until the end of the season.
Calhanoglu, on his day, could play for any Premier League side. His ability from set-pieces is exquisite, as is his long-range shooting and ability to create something out of nothing.
Though he has a tall price tag, he would be worth it if he can recreate his best.
