West Ham could face an unexpected obstacle as Roma look set to gatecrash their move to land River Plate star, Gonzalo Montiel.
According to fresh reports from Corriere Dello Sport in Italy, Roma are now keen on landing Montiel. Furthermore, it is claimed that the Argentinian defender is open to a move to the Italian capital ahead of London.
Such news would be a bitter blow for West Ham. It was claimed previously that the Hammers had agreed a £9m deal with River to bring Montiel to England. A deal was all but done, barring a work-permit for the 23-year-old.
However, Roma are apparently looking to scupper the Hammers’ hopes of landing Montiel.
The full-back has risen to prominence in South America in recent seasons thanks to a number of fine performances for one of the world’s biggest clubs.
He seemingly has a choice to make now. The Premier League and Serie A will both be attractive propositions. A move to West Ham could see him replace fellow countrymen, Pablo Zabaleta.
A move to Rome, meanwhile, would see him follow in the footsteps of Argentina legends such as Gabriel Batistuta, Abel Balbo, and Walter Samuel.
Bad news for West Ham, Rome is an attractive place – TBR View
Nothing against playing in London or for West Ham, but the chance to move to Rome and play for one of Europe’s biggest clubs might be too good a chance for Montiel to reject.
As mentioned, Rome has played host to some fine Argentinian players in the past. Montiel, then, might well fancy putting his name up alongside those greats.
West Ham should keep pushing for a deal, though. You just never know in football and the Premier League, after all, is still the best league in the world.
