CalcioMercato claim that West Ham United are close to securing a new deal for defender Angelo Ogbonna – despite his injury against Liverpool

Ogbonna, 33, is out of contract next summer. The 13-time Italy international has been incredibly consistent under the guidance of David Moyes of late.

This season, the £8million (Mail) signing had started and finished all 10 Premier League games. That is, before Sunday’s win over Liverpool.

The ex-Juventus star came off the pitch after just 22 minutes, after lining up in a back four alongside Kurt Zouma. He sustained a knee injury.

It is unclear how long he will be out for, with a scan expected today. But regardless of his injury issue, a new deal seems to be in the offing.

New Ogbonna deal: How long should West Ham give him?

The defender is currently out of contract at West Ham next summer, and he certainly deserves longer at the club – already surpassing 200 games.

But at the age off 33, West Ham must not hand him a deal that sees him stay at the club – earn a wage without giving much back.

They need to find the balance right. Until the summer of 2023? Or perhaps another year after that? Those should be the two options.

While first choice now, if Ogbonna is okay being a fringe player by the time the 2023-24 season kicks in – then he a deal until June 2024 makes sense.
