Turkish newspaper Fanatik have claimed that West Ham United are ‘close to an agreement’ with Besiktas for experienced midfielder Gary Medel this summer.
Manuel Pellegrini has been constantly linked with a move for the 31-year-old midfielder since taking over at West Ham, with the ex-Manchester City boss looking to sign his fellow countryman for a bargain fee from Besiktas.
Medel, who has had a spell in the Premier League with Cardiff City, has less than 12 months remaining on his contract and is likely to be available for transfer. Still only 31 years of age, he could have plenty to offer in England.
The pocket-sized terrier has enormous experience at both club and international level. He has almost 400 club appearances to his name in England, Spain, Italy and Turkey among others, as well as 125 Chile caps.
The report claims that West Ham are close to a deal, and the belief is that the two parties have shook hands. A deal could be announced very soon.
TBR’s view – Medel a solid player, but do West Ham need him?
Yes, Medel is hugely experienced and is of the same nationality of Pellegrini. That would make him a solid squad player, especially considering that he can play in the middle of defence.
But the Hammers already have Carlos Sanchez, who is a similar, experienced statesman with previous Premier League experience and the aggression of a South American midfielder. West Ham have a Medel, already.
