According to Bild, West Ham United are interested in signing Charles Aranguiz. However, Bayer Leverkusen are keen to hang onto the 30-year-old midfielder.
Manuel Pellegrini may well be an admirer of the 70-cap Chile international, but bringing his compatriot to the London Stadium may prove impossible. Bayer Leverkusen are clear on their stance that Aranguiz is not for sale.
It is unsurprising that Bayer Leverkusen have taken such a firm position regarding the future of Aranguiz. The midfielder is a key player for them and impressed in the Bundesliga last season.
Aranguiz would have added some experience, tenacity and quality to the Hammers’ ranks, but Pellegrini will likely now have to look elsewhere.
The Irons look set to miss out on Aranguiz. However, that’s no disaster. Following the addition of Pablo Fornals earlier in the summer and the emergence of Declan Rice last season, the Irons’ midfield is already a highly competitive area of the pitch. Pellegrini is not lacking options in the middle of the park. Aranguiz, therefore, would have been an unnecessary addition.
What’s more, given the Bundesliga ace’s age, he’d have offered very little in terms of resale value. Therefore, any investment in him would have to have been practically immediately written off. All in all then, missing out on Aranguiz may well be for the best.
