Newcastle United will not take up the option to buy Antonio Barreca this summer, according to a report by the Chronicle.
They report that after the Monaco defender’s loan spell at St James’ Park turned out woefully, the club will unsurprisingly not sanction the £8 million option to buy him now that’s come to an end.
Newcastle are short on full backs, and the 24-year-old was brought in last January to remedy that situation, but didn’t get to grips with English football and Matt Ritchie was persistently preferred to the Italian.
The report claims that Newcastle are still looking for full backs on either side, but Barreca won’t be on that list.
Newcastle are right to pursue other avenues but as difficult as it is given their limited resources and confusion behind the scenes, they have to make sure that their next full back recruits are of a higher standard than Barreca.
It will help that they have more time during the summer window to scout and approach players of a higher quality, but it’s important Newcastle get that right.
Rafa Benitez is a fantastic organiser of a defence but there’s only so much even he can do with players not of the right standard.
