Everton legend Duncan Ferguson has made it clear to the Toffees board that he’d love to be the next permanent manager of the club, according to The Daily Mail.

Rafa Benitez was shown the door after his side’s defeat to Norwich City over the weekend. Everton are in a terrible position at the moment, having won just one of their last 12 games in the Premier League.

The ownership and the board have to get the next manager right, but a permanent appointment at this stage of the season is easier said than done.

As a result, Everton are reportedly looking at interim options and Ferguson is leading the race.

Duncan Ferguson wants to be the next permanent Everton manager

The Daily Mail have claimed that Ferguson, who played over 200 games for Everton and has been the assistant manager at the club for a while now, is keen to land the permanent job.

The Scot, labelled as an ‘underrated‘ manager by Neville Southall, is almost guaranteed to take temporary charge of the side when Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa come to Goodison Park this weekend. There’s a very good chance that he could even get the job until the end of the season.

However, the report claims that Ferguson wants a permanent role. The 50-year-old has reportedly ‘made it clear’ to Everton’s bosses that he’d like to be Benitez’s permanent successor, but it is unclear if the owners are ready to take that big a gamble.

Almost every Everton fan will agree that the club is in a mess right now. Benitez was never really the right appointment and it is no surprise to many that things have panned out the way it has.

Everton need to get the next appointment right, but most top managers already have a job at the moment. An interim option in Ferguson would not be a bad idea at all, especially considering how well he did after Marco Silva was sacked.

However, it would be a risk to hand Ferguson the full-time job right away. An interim role until the end of the season and then a decision on a permanent offer depending on where Everton are in the summer would be a much smarter option.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out but one thing’s certain if Ferguson gets the permanent job, Everton fans will back him 100 per cent!
