The Liverpool Echo have claimed that Everton defender Matthew Pennington is a target for English Championship sides Derby County and Wigan Athletic this summer.
Pennington, 24, was deemed surplus to requirements at Everton last summer after the Toffees brought in Yerry Mina from Barcelona and Kurt Zouma on loan from Chelsea.
It saw the England youth international move to Ipswich Town on a season-long loan, where he clocked up 31 appearances in all competitions. But he failed to prevent the Tractor Boys from suffering relegation.
However, he has returned to Goodison Park this summer, where he managed just nine career appearances for the Toffees. Pennington has a contract with Everton until the summer of 2021.
But given that he has almost no chance of a future with Marco Silva’s side, a move this summer is inevitable. Derby and Wigan are looking to take advantage.
Pennington has got to leave Everton. Putting sentiment behind, there is no chance he can break into the side – and more importantly, he simply is not good enough.
Derby would be an excellent move for Pennington, but the chances he would be first choice even in Frank Lampard’s side looks unlikely. Wigan should be Pennington’s choice.
