Report: 'Tremendous' Arsenal star has not travelled to Liverpool with squad
Arsenal have been dealt a further blow ahead of their Carabao Cup semi-final with Liverpool, with Goal reporting that Martin Odegaard has not travelled with the rest of the squad for the first-leg.
The Gunners have been dealing with a raft of injuries of late, particularly in midfield. Odegaard was one of their remaining midfielders who was available for Sunday’s trip to Nottingham Forest.
However, the Norwegian is looking set to miss out at Anfield. Goal reports that he was not involved in training on Thursday. And he has not travelled to Merseyside with the rest of the team.
Unfortunately, Odegaard is not the only player Arsenal will be without. Goal reports that both Takehiro Tomiyasu and Emile Smith Rowe remain on the sidelines.
Odegaard injury leaves Arsenal with even bigger mountain to climb
Liverpool are without key players themselves for the tie. Both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are away on international duty.
But Arsenal are certainly underdogs. And not having Odegaard available makes their task even greater. He is someone who could have played in the midfield two. But obviously, he has performed superbly in the number 10 role since signing permanently – with Arteta previously labelling him ‘tremendous‘ after one display.
And clearly, Tomiyasu and Smith Rowe will also be big misses. Tomiyasu is, by some way, Arsenal’s best right-back. Cedric has struggled.
And Smith Rowe is one of the players who can make something happen out of nothing. That is needed against a team such as Liverpool.
Mikel Arteta will be setting his sights on his side keeping themselves in the tie. And with the North London Derby ahead this weekend, he will be desperately hoping that the likes of Odegaard, Smith Rowe and Tomiyasu are all set to return imminently.
