Tottenham are reportedly weighing up a potential swoop for Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard.

According to the Mirror, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is considering a move for the 28-year-old at the end of the season.

It is explained that the centre-back is high up on Mourinho’s transfer targets, as he looks to strengthen in the heart of defence for next season.

The report states Spurs feel they could land him for a “bargain”, something they did when they signed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Premier League rivals Southampton last summer.

Vestergaard, who earns £60,000-a-week (Spotrac), is out of contract at St Mary’s in 2022, making it more likely Spurs could get him on a good deal.

The 6ft 6in ace is a colossus defender that is understandably dominant in the air and a real physical presence at the back, plus for Southampton he’s been a consistent figure with his playing out from the back.

TBR’s View:

Southampton have been a feeder club for several seasons now to the elite, developing so many top-class talents in their ranks before selling them.

Spurs got Hojbjerg for an inspired £15million (Sky Sports) from the Saints last year, which has been a genius transfer rom Mourinho.

It looks like they are now hoping to reunite him with ex-club teammate Vestergaard, who he plays alongside on the international stage with Denmark.

Spurs have rotated at numerous times this season between all their different centre-halves, so it’s an area the manager needs to fix.

Whether Vestergaard could make the step up remains to be seen, but he’s at his peak aged 28, and is worth pursuing if available at a decent transfer price.
