Report: Tottenham want to sign Manchester United player, but £50m price could prove a stumbling block

The Daily Star claim Tottenham are keen on signing Manchester United attacker Anthony Martial this summer. The signing of Jadon Sancho has seen Martial fall down the pecking order. But the report claims there are two stumbling blocks – his price tag, and his enormous wage demands.

Martial, 25, endured a tricky season last term – with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer preferring either Marcus Rashford or Edinson Cavani up top. Of his 36 appearances, he completed 90 minutes on just 12 occasions – starting 27 and being substituted in 15 others. He has a contract at United until 2024.

But the signing of Sancho, and that Cavani is sticking around, pushes Martial down the pecking order. Tottenham are keen. But United might want as much as £50million – given they paid Monaco that figure in 2015. He also earns £250,000 a week, which is likely to deter Tottenham.

Is Martial the kind of player Tottenham want?

He is best on the left or up front. Son Heung-min has just signed a new deal, so that already sees Martial second choice – or back-up – to Son. Up front, Harry Kane does look more likely than ever to leave. But is he going to? Time will tell. If he does, is Martial the man needed to cover him?

So, for the money that would have to be spent to get Martial, he is not worth a deal. If Fabio Paratici can work his magic and get Manchester United to send Martial to Spurs on a loan-to-buy deal – then perhaps a deal can be done. But for £50million, and £250,000 a week, he is far too expensive.
