Report: Tottenham want to raid Mourinho's side Roma, Paratici eyeing defender
CalcioMercato say Tottenham are looking to raid Jose Mourinho’s Roma and lure Roger Ibanez to North London, ahead of the January window.
Tottenhma have strengthened their centre-back options, with Cristian Romero moving to Spurs from Atalanta – after a brilliant 20-21 season.
But Fabio Paratici is not done. The Spurs sporting director is clearly still looking to improve the defence, with Davinson Sanchez’s form inconsistent.
Eric Dier has improved so far this season, while there are high hopes for Joe Rodon. But clearly, Paratici wants another centre-back – in Ibanez.
The Brazilian defender joined Roma on loan for 18 months from Atalanta in January 2020, before a deal was made permanent in the last window.
He has since clocked up 57 appearances for Roma, offering cover at right-back – but mainly as a centre-back. He has been called up by Brazil.
Ibanez to Tottenham: Brazilian a good signing, but needed?
Tottenham probably do not need a centre-back. As aforementioned, Spurs have four central defenders – as well as Japhet Tanganga, who is shining.
So, if Spurs are told that it will cost a princely sum to get Ibanez – which is likely – then surely they are better off pursuing other signings.
Spurs need improvements in the middle of the park, perhaps another option out wide and certainly cover for England skipper Harry Kane.
A good player, a good signing, and would improve Spurs. But if funds are limited, then it needs to be spent on other areas first.
That is, of course, if Mourinho even wants to sell him. The Brazilian has started six of seven Roma’s games, clearly loved by the ex-Spurs gaffer.
