Tottenham Hotspur have made James Maddison a top target ahead of the January transfer window. According to The Mirror, Tottenham will try to sign Maddison as a replacement for Christian Eriksen.

Spurs seem resigned to Eriksen’s exit with no progress on contract talks. His current deal expires next summer and his recent performances have indicated that he is thinking about his future away from North London.

With Eriksen out the door in January or the summer, Spurs want a midfield playmaker to replace the Denmark star. Maddison is seen as a like-for-like replacement for Eriksen.

The 22-year-old has scored three times this season and provided two assists. Maddison now has a tally of 10 goals and nine assists in just under 50 Foxes games. This has earned him another call-up to the England squad and he will be hoping to make his debut soon.

Manchester United will compete for Maddison, though. This report adds that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants Maddison to improve his midfield options. Man United are confident of signing the midfielder for £60m.

TBR’s view

Maddison would be the ideal like-for-like Eriksen successor. He is young, English and will be hungry to prove himself on the biggest stage. Moreover, he is already proven in the Premier League.

The ex-Coventry and Norwich star created more chances than any other player last season. In this sense, he is similar to Eriksen. Maddison has the ability to unlock defences and create chances for the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min and others. It would be an exciting season to lift fans out of their gloom.
