Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo have claimed Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Barcelona midfielder Carles Alena in the January window, as a possible replacement for Christian Eriksen.
Eriksen continues to be linked with an exit and Pochettino has seemingly started drawing up options to replace the Denmark international. Former Ajax star Eriksen is supposedly interesting Real Madrid, among other European heavyweights.
Alena, 21, is a Spain Under-21 international that has broken through Barcleona’s esteemed La Masia academy and has clocked up 35 senior appearances for Ernesto Valverde’s side. But this season, he has managed just 45 minutes of La Liga action.
The Spain Under-21 international has enormous potential but that is being suffocated at Nou Camp. He is likely to be looking to leave the club, with Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, Arthur, Frenkie de Jong and Arturo Vidal ahead in the pecking order.
Marca claimed back in 2017 after Alena had signed a new contract, that the midfielder has a release clause of £64.5million.
TBR’s view – Alena would be an excellent Tottenham signing
Alena is an excellent player and there is no doubt that he would be a stunning signing for Tottenham. Barcelona cannot expect for a fee anywhere near his release clause, given his lack of game time.
A Spain Under-21 international, Alena could be worth a figure in the region of £30million, but it remains to be seen if Barcelona want to sell Alena – and indeed how much the Spanish club would want for his services.
Whether Alena is good enough to replace Eriksen is unfair, given that Alena is still only 21. The midfielder would be a work in progress, rather than an instant replacement.
