Spanish newspaper AS have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Real Madrid playmaker Marco Asensio, but they have been told to meet the Spaniard’s release clause.

The 23-year-old has shone once again for Real, having a hand in 13 goals during 44 league and cup appearances from the middle of the park. Indeed, Asensio scored six times and laid on seven assists.

Asensio has constantly been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Spurs and Liverpool reportedly admirers in the last couple of years. Now, Tottenham are said to be interested again.

However, a move will definitely not materialise. That is because Real have told Tottenham to pay Asensio’s release clause if they want to sign him – and that currently stands at an enormous £620million.

Zinedine Zidane is desperate to keep 22-time Spain international Asensio, even though Mauricio Pochettino is said to be “in love” with Asensio. It is believed that Asensio would only consider a move, if Real did not want him.

TBR’s view

Asensio would be an incredible signing for any Premier League team, and certainly would be one of the division’s best players. It is no surprise, then, that Real have inserted such a big clause in his contract.

Spurs will have to look elsewhere as there is simply no chance that they will be signing Asensio this summer, even if Christian Eriksen was included in a deal.
