Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of signing Carles Alena have been boosted by recent reports emerging from Spain.
According to Sport, Barcelona will let Alena leave the club on loan during the January transfer window. Tottenham have been linked with Alena in recent weeks so they will be hopeful of concluding a deal.
Spurs are reportedly eyeing Alena as a potential replacement for Christian Eriksen, as per Mundo Deportivo. With Eriksen’s form in decline and an exit looking inevitable, Alena is a potential target to take the Denmark midfielder’s spot.
Barcelona want Alena to head out on loan, though, rather than on a permanent deal. And the Catalan club would also like to keep him in La Liga. Real Betis, Celta Vigo, Granada and Getafe are all interested in signing the 21-year-old this January (Sport).
Alena is a technically gifted central midfielder who has come through the ranks at Barcelona. The Spain U21 international has played 35 times for Barcelona, scoring three goals. But he has been limited to just 45 minutes of action this season, hence the availability for loan.
Alena would be an interesting signing for Tottenham because he has unexplored potential. Whether he would be the instant fix to replace Eriksen in Tottenham’s midfield is another question.
But it looks like Barcelona only want to loan Alena out – rather than entertain a permanent exit. With La Liga clubs also lining up, Spurs would have to move quickly to win this race.
