Tottenham Hotspur will wait to find out whether Erik Lamela and Jan Vertonghen are fit to play this Wednesday, The Mirror reports.
Spurs travel to Serbia to take on Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League – days after the 1-1 draw with Everton. Lamela and Vertonghen are touch-and-go as they both prepare for late fitness tests.
Both players were absent at Goodison Park last week in the dramatic 1-1 draw against Everton. Son Heung-Min’s foul on Andre Gomes left the Portuguese midfielder with a potentially season-ending ankle injury. Meanwhile, Son could sit out against Red Star as he is not in the right state of mind.
Lamela and Vertonghen will be hoping to return. Lamela has a thigh injury and Vertonghen is nursing a hamstring injury. These two could boost Mauricio Pochettino’s options in midweek.
Meanwhile, Harry Kane, who missed the Everton clash through illness, is likely to return.
Lamela’s return to the team would be timely with Son potentially missing and Eriksen out of form. The Argentina midfielder has been one of Tottenham’s best players this season and he could be the catalyst behind a turnaround in form.
Vertonghen, on the other hand, has not been at his best this season. But he still offers Spurs an extra option at centre-back and will push Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez for starts.
