Report: Tottenham step up interest to sign RB Leizpig captain Marcel Sabitzer

German newspaper Bild have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are ready to step up their interest in RB Leipzig captain Marcel Sabitzer ahead of the summer window, with the Austrian starring in the Champions League against Spurs.

Sabitzer, 26, has been in stunning form for Leipzig this season, having a hand in 23 goals during his 35 league and cup appearances. Indeed, Sabitzer has scored 15 times from midfielder – and created eight more.

Two of those goals came in Leipzig’s 4-0 aggregate win over Tottenham in the last 16 of the Champions League. His performance caught the eye of Jose Mourinho, and now Spurs have made him their top transfer priority this summer.

The report claims Mourinho has a transfer budget in the region of £130million this summer, and is willing to blow £45million of it to land Sabitzer. He has a contract at Leipzig until the summer of 2022.

TBR’s view – Sabitzer would be a stunning signing for Tottenham

Under Mourinho, Spurs have lacked that drive and leadership from midfield that the likes of Mousa Dembele used to provide. A goalscoring midfielder who has already proven he can shine at the top level would be a top signing.

Sabitzer boasts leadership, goals and the sense that he can push a team forward with his own hands. Yes, he would be expensive, but Sabitzer is a good age and is only going to get better. A no-brainer for Spurs.
