Report: Tottenham star signed by Mourinho could leave; made just 13 PL starts last season
Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty could reportedly leave the club this summer just under 12 months since being signed.
The Sun claim that the Republic of Ireland international might depart the north London side in the transfer window. Doherty struggled for form and consistency last season for Spurs, making just 13 Premier League starts.
Signed by Jose Mourinho last year on the back of two impressive seasons with Wolves, the Dublin-born defender was a regular target from Tottenham supporters for criticism.
Doherty played the majority of his football as part of a back-four in the right-back position, a different role to his wing-back duties under Nuno Espirito Santo.
Doherty could become key for Tottenham next season
As reported by Football London, right-back is a position the club are looking to strengthen this summer. Yet with Serge Aurier looking increasingly likely to leave Tottenham, Doherty could become the number one in that role should he remain.
Furthermore, Doherty might perform better in the position next season given he now has had a full year to acclimatise to the squad and to playing at a higher standard of football.
Whilst the Irish defender made just 13 Premier League starts last term, the 29-year-old made 29 appearances in all competitions, playing well over 2,000 minutes.
Nuno appointment might save Doherty’s Tottenham career
Yet a defining factor that could see Doherty remain at Tottenham is who the club appoint as their next manager. And in this current moment in time, that man could be the right-back’s former boss Nuno.
The Portuguese coach is back on Tottenham’s radar to become their next manager as reported by the Standard. And if Nuno is hired by the club, it could give Doherty a new lease of life in north London.
Doherty thrived under Nuno in their two seasons together in the Premier League. And with Spurs, the duo can rekindle their relationship which might see the former Bohemians defender flourish in north London.
