CalcioMercato report that Alessio Romagnoli is ‘close’ to agreeing a new contract with AC Milan – despite being linked with a move to Tottenham.

The 26-year-old is out of contract at Milan at the end of the season. Milan have been working hard to keep their skipper in red and black.

Paolo Maldini’s hard work seems to have paid off. CalcioMercato say that Romagnoli is ‘close’ to agreeing a new deal, worth around £65,000 a week.

The report states that the Italy international has agreed to accept a 30% pay cut. That is, despite being linked with a move to Tottenham in January.

A previous report from CalcioMercato stated that Antonio Conte was looking into a bargain £8.5million move to sign the left-footed centre-back.

Tottenham blow: Romagnoli perfect for Conte back three, and cheap

He would have been an ideal addition to Tottenham’s defence. Spurs need a left-footed centre-back and Romagnoli would have been perfect for Conte.

Strong, intelligent, a leader and excellent on the ball – he is very much like a younger Jan Vertonghen. Milan spent £21million to sign him (ESPN).

So, to be able to get him for less than half of Milan’s outlay at £8.5million – Spurs would have been laughing. However, Romagnoli is loyal.

Clearly, he loves Milan. Willing to accept a reduction of around 30% – meaning he was on close to £100,000 a week beforehand, deserves praise.

But Tottenham will feel they have missed out on what could have been the ideal left-footed centre-back to come in for Ben Davies.
