Report: Tottenham set for Gvardiol disappointment; Chelsea confident

Tottenham Hotspur may be set for disappointment over Josko Gvardiol, with 90min reporting that Chelsea are optimistic that they will agree a deal for the RB Leipzig defender.

Gvardiol is one of the most highly-rated centre-backs around. The 20-year-old is currently away with Croatia at the World Cup, starting all three of their group-stage games in Qatar.

He has plenty of admirers. Fabrizio Romano recently suggested that the Blues want to sign the defender. Meanwhile, Antonio Conte is keen to bring him to Tottenham.

In fact, Tuttomercatoweb recently reported that Croatia teammate Ivan Perisic is working to convince Gvardiol about a possible move to Spurs.

Unfortunately for Tottenham, it appears that they may be set to miss out.

According to 90min, talks between Chelsea and RB Leipzig are ongoing. And there is optimism from those at Stamford Bridge that they are going to agree a deal for Gvardiol.

He will not cost a huge sum either. 90min suggests that a release clause worth around £45 million will become active next summer. Chelsea however, are prepared to pay more to get a deal done.

Frustration for Conte

It will be a shame for Spurs should they miss out on Gvardiol. He looks to have a frightening amount of talent. And he is someone his next team could be largely built around in the years to come.

Gvardiol is an ‘extraordinary‘ talent. And Tottenham’s defence remains a work in progress, with Clement Lenglet and Ben Davies generally battling it out on the left of the back three.

Certainly, there is scope for Chelsea to net themselves an absolute bargain if they do indeed get a move across the line.

As it stands, it appears that Graham Potter’s men are hopeful that he will be joining them in the future.
