Spanish outlet AS have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign Newcastle United attacker Ayoze Perez this summer, but face competition from two Serie A heavyweights.
Perez, 25, has been in sensational form for Newcastle this season. The former Tenerife forward has netted 11 Premier League goals, including a hat-trick against Southampton.
Given that Newcastle have only scored 38 league goals all season and that Perez has mainly played from the right flank, his goalscoring record is highly impressive. Now, plenty of teams are coming in for him.
Perez has been linked with a return to Spain but it appears that Napoli are leading the race for his signature. AS claim Carlo Ancelotti’s side have already made an approach to Newcastle, after failing to sign Hirving Lozano.
But Tottenham are also interested in Perez – as are Spurs’ Champions League group stage opponents Inter Milan. It is believed Perez has a release clause worth around £25.7m in his contract.
From Newcastle’s point of view, losing Perez for anything less than £30million is a travesty and Rafa Benitez must do all he can to keep the forward. But he will also understand that Perez has outgrown Newcastle.
But from Spurs’ point of view, you are eyeing up a bargain. Proven in the Premier League, only 25 years of age and available for a cheap price. Owner Daniel Levy will be sure to sanction a move for Perez.
Tottenham have to be quick, though. Napoli and Inter will prove tantalising options for Perez, and Spurs must begin talks immediately if they are to win the race for the uncapped Spaniard.
