Italian outlet CalcioMercato have claimed that AC Milan right-back Davide Calabria will reject both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, if the two sides make summer bids.
The 22-year-old has broken into the Milan side for the past couple of the seasons. He is now one of the first names on the team sheet for Gennaro Gattuso’s starting eleven.
But even if Milan and any interested parties – Spurs, Manchester United or Everton – agree a fee, it seems as though it will be difficult to tempt Calabria into leaving the San Siro.
Calabria is renowned to prefer to defend before getting forward, making him exceptionally solid. But he is also more than capable of getting forward – scoring against Napoli in a 3-2 loss. He has a contract until the summer of 2022.
Kieran Trippier’s form is a cause for concern. A number of calamitous performances since the turn of the years has fans frustrated – given that the ex-Burnley star was one of England’s best at the World Cup.
Serge Aurier is hardly an improvement, so a new right-back is needed. But given that Calabria wants to stay at Milan, Spurs have suffered a significant transfer blow. Especially if Calabria is available at just £21.4million.
Spurs need a new right-sided defender sooner rather than later and Calabria would have been perfect.
