Report: Tottenham receive transfer boost in pursuit of England international
The Sun report that West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has opted to stall on a new contract – handing Tottenham the chance to nab his signature.
England international Johnstone, 28, was expected to leave West Brom in the window. The Baggies had suffered relegation to the Championship.
But instead, West Brom’s price tag was not met and now the goalkeeper remains at the Hawthorns. He is out of contract in June 2022.
The chances of him leaving on a free are already high, and they have become even greater amid new reports. He is stalling on a new deal.
The report states that he is focusing on helping West Brom return to the Premier League – and will then make a decision on his future.
It is likely that should West Brom gain promotion, he might be more tempted to put pen to paper. Tottenham are touted as a club interested.
Johnstone in, Lloris out, is excellent Tottenham business
Like Johnstone, club captain Hugo Lloris is out of contract next summer. The chances of the Frenchman signing a new deal are also slim.
That is because Lloris has spent nine years at Spurs and turning 35 in December, Spurs might look for something new. Perhaps, Pierluigi Gollini.
The Italian has joined on a loan-to-buy deal and while Lloris remains first choice, he is waiting in the wings. He could certainly start when Lloris goes.
But will Spurs look to replace Lloris, rather than allow Gollini to become first choice? Well, the latest report hands them a boost, if they choose to.
