Respected Italian outlet Tuttosport have reported that Tottenham Hotspur are ready to table an offer worth £43million for AS Roma playmaker Nicolo Zaniolo.
The 19-year-old has shone for Roma since joining Claudio Ranieri’s side from Inter Milan last summer. He has clocked up 33 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring six goals.
Two of those goals came in Roma’s 2-1 win in the Champions League last 16 first leg against FC Porto. Roma eventually lost to the Portuguese side, but Zaniolo’s goalscoring ability was a positive.
His form has been so good that Zaniolo has even seen him called up by Roberto Mancini to Italy’s senior side, where he has won two caps this season in Euro 2020 qualifiers against Finland and Licheinstein.
Tottenham are said to be rivalling Manchester City and Juventus for the teenage starlet, while the Chronicle claimed in March that Newcastle United were also interested in Zaniolo.
Tottenham desperately need a central midfielder. The loss of Mousa Dembele has seen Spurs lose a bit of flair in the middle of the park, while Mauricio Pochettino has had limited cover.
Eric Dier has missed almost the entire second half of the season, while Victor Wanyama is still getting back to speed following injury. Harry Winks has deputised, as has Moussa Sissoko, but both are now out injured.
Bringing in another central midfielder this summer has to be a priority and while Zaniolo is not the finished product, he certainly boasts plenty of potential – enough to become one of the best in Europe. At £43million, he is a bargain.
