Report: Tottenham ready £25m swoop for 6-goal talent who ‘always gives 100 per cent’
Tottenham Hotspur are ready to edge rival interest from Fiorentina to sign Stuttgart winger Nicolas Gonzalez, according to Sky Italia.
The Serie A side are hitting the transfer market hard in order to strengthen Gennaro Gattuso’s squad this summer. Gonzalez is a prime target to bolster the Viola attack, after finishing 13th in the Serie A scoring charts last season.
But Fiorentina have already seen an offer worth €22million (£19m) plus €3m (£2.5m) in add-ons rejected. The difference in valuations is not unsurmountable, with Stuttgart chasing €25m (£21.5m) upfront with a further €4m (£3.5m) in bonuses.
Fiorentina are set for further talks this week to see if the Artemio Franchi Stadium side will increase their offer. They view Gonzalez as a strong name to ignite Gattuso’s era in Tuscany after he scored six goals last season.
However, Fiorentina will also need to contend with Tottenham in the race to sign the 23-year-old. Spurs are ready to meet Stuttgart’s demands for a deal to make Gonzalez one of the first signings of Paulo Fonseca and Fabio Paratici’s spells in north London.
Gonzalez featured just 15 times in the Bundesliga last season as he struggled with a raft of muscular injuries. But the forward was able to offer six goals and two assists after helping Die Roten clinch promotion in 2019/20.
He is also a target for Brighton & Hove Albion, per Fabrizio Romano, who claims Spurs are preparing their offer. Gonzalez has three years remaining on his Stuttgart contract after signing a 12-month extension in November.
TBR’s view: Gonzalez would be exciting at Tottenham
Gonzalez would be an interesting addition for Tottenham next season if Paratici makes the Argentine one of his first purchases. The 23-year-old may have endured his issues with injuries last term, but could pull the Stuttgart strings when fit.
Gonzalez is also versatile and copes well under pressure, with three of his six goals coming from penalties last season. He is also acrobatic in his movement, can provide a creative touch to pull defences apart and has a wide range to his passing.
The six-cap forward, currently with the Argentina squad for the Copa America, has a real desire about him, as well. This allows Gonzalez to go the extra length on the pitch, while Stuttgart boss Pellegrino Matarazzo claimed via Bundesliga.com:
“He’s got a lot of qualities, but what I like best about him is that he’s a winner. He wants to win at all costs. He always gives 100 per cent, and gets stuck in.”
