Tottenham Hotspur plan to sign Atletico Madrid star Yannick Ferreira Carrasco and use him at wing-back – the same position they wanted Nicolo Zaniolo to play in had they signed him.

Reports revealed yesterday that Spurs have entered talks with Atletico Madrid to sign the Belgian wide man, who has been branded as an ‘incredible’ dribbler by Diego Simeone.

Tottenham could now sign Carrasco instead of Zaniolo

It is no secret at this point that Spurs were really keen to sign Zaniolo from AS Roma this summer.

Reports revealed that Antonio Conte was constantly urging Fabio Paratici to make a move for the talented Italian. It was even claimed that Zaniolo had packed his bags and was ready to move to North London, but Jose Mourinho stepped in and changed his mind.

To make matters worse for Spurs, Zaniolo has suffered an injury, which all but rules out a move for him. That has forced Tottenham to look elsewhere, and Carrasco seems to be the man.

90min claim that Tottenham are pushing for the Atletico Madrid star as an alternative to Zaniolo. The Belgian’s versatility combined with the fact that he’s very comfortable playing as a wing-back in a 3-4-3 makes him an excellent option for Conte’s system.

With just two days left in the window, Spurs will have to hurry if they want to get this deal done.

Irrespective of what happens in the final two days of the window, Tottenham should be really happy with the business they’ve done this summer.

Conte demanded to be backed at the end of last season, and he can have no complaints. Spurs look incredibly strong, and the depth in their squad now is arguably better than it has been over the last 10 years.

Carrasco, if they can get him in, would be an excellent signing. He may not raise the excitement level as Zaniolo or Adama Traore would, but he could prove to be a very smart addition – just like Ivan Perisic, who has been brought in to play in a similar wing-back role.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out, but if Conte really wants to bring in another wing back, he’ll have to be quick.
