Report: Tottenham on pole position for Bastoni; Guardiola also keen

Antonio Conte and Tottenham Hotspur are on pole position to sign Alessandro Bastoni should he fail to agree a new deal with Inter Milan, with Calciomercato reporting that Pep Guardiola is also an admirer of the 23-year-old.

Spurs fans may be wary of getting too carried away about the links with Bastoni – who has previously been labelled a ‘superstar‘. For much of the summer, the centre-back seemed to be Tottenham’s key target at the back.

At one stage, reports from 90min claimed that he had told Inter that he wanted to leave and join Spurs. Of course, a move to North London would have seen Bastoni reunited with Conte, who led the Nerazzurri to the Scudetto.

However, those reports proved to be wide of the mark. Bastoni ultimately stayed put.

Tottenham did sign another centre-back, with Clement Lenglet arriving. However, the Frenchman only joined on loan. So it is a situation that Spurs may well look to revisit in the future.

And it seems that Bastoni may well be their top target once again – if he has not signed a new contract.

Calciomercato reports that Inter want to hand the youngster a deal worth around £77,000-a-week. And that will run until 2027.

But should they fail to reach an agreement, Tottenham will seemingly be waiting in the wings. Calciomercato claims that Conte is first in line to sign Bastoni if he looks to leave Inter.

Meanwhile, Guardiola has looked several times at the defender.

Clearly, it appears that Inter are in a strong position to tie Bastoni down to a new deal. He was happy to stay in the summer. And they are ready to hand him a big pay-rise.

Tottenham fans will certainly hold out little hope unless things get a lot more serious. They need to strengthen further at centre-back. But right now, it still appears to be unlikely that Bastoni will be their man.
