Report: Tottenham now planning to sell £9m Pochettino signing this summer, Conte’s never played him

Tottenham are preparing to sell Jack Clarke, who will be into the final year of his contract when next season starts.

Football.London report that Spurs are hoping to drum up interest in the £9 million Englishman ahead of the market reopening.

Clarke was signed for £9 million by Mauricio Pochettino in July 2019 but it has just not worked out for him in north London.

Clarke joined a manager in Pochettino and a club with a reputation for bringing through their own young players but he has been unable to impress any manager since.

It makes sense for the club to try and make some of their money back for a player who can leave for nothing in a little more than a year’s time.

It seems most likely that a Championship could would come in for him, but even then, he has not pulled up any trees on his loan returns to the second tier.

Antonio Conte has never played Clarke, who is 21 now having joined Spurs as a teenager and he needs to reignite his career by playing games.

We have seen how someone like Dele Alli, who achieved far more than Clarke as a youngster has fallen from grace and is now scratching around for form and fitness to salvage his career.

This is Conte’s first summer in charge of the club and he will want to shape the squad to his will.

That means getting rid of players he does not rate, who could potentially drag the energy of the group down because they are not getting games.

If that raises more funds to get in players he does want, all the better and Clarke needs a fresh start somewhere.

Perhaps he moved too early or picked the wrong club but he has plenty of time to sort that out so long as he can go to a team now where he can play regularly.

The report says he may go on loan for the final year of his contract, just to get back out there playing before a permanent move on a free in 2023.
