Report: Tottenham now given chance to sign £22m player who was absolutely 'dreadful' at the World Cup yesterday
Spurs could be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper over the next two transfer windows with Hugo Lloris in the latter stages of his career.
The Frenchman has been a loyal servant to the club, racking up a total of 437 appearances for Tottenham since making the switch from Lyon back in 2012.
But with Lloris is set to turn 36-years-old next month, Spurs will have to think about replacing their captain soon.
Fabrizio Romano claimed last week that Antonio Conte is ‘happy’ with Lloris but the club are now actively looking for a long-term replacement. And it seems that they have now been offered the chance to sign Chelsea shot stopper Mendy.
Tottenham given chance to sign Mendy
90 Min reports that Mendy has now been offered to Tottenham and is not expecting to be handed a new contract by Chelsea.
The 30-year-old has fallen down the pecking order in west London, with Kepa Arrizabalaga now the first-choice keeper at Stamford Bridge once again.
Mendy has been out-of-form for Chelsea over the past few months and didn’t get off to the best start in the World Cup yesterday.
Senegal lost their opening group stage game against Holland 2-0 and Mendy played a role in both goals.
He was beaten to the ball by Cody Gakpo for the first goal and his initial save right before Holland’s second was far from convincing.
Mendy pushed Steven Bergwijn’s tame shot straight into the path of Davy Klaassen, who ensured Holland would be kicking off their campaign with a win.
And Chris Sutton slammed Mendy for his mistake for Holland’s opener on BBC Radio 5 Live yesterday.
He said: “They just needed that moment of quality. The ball was on the money. Gakpo just had to find the pace of the ball, whipped in brilliantly by De Jong.
“It comes off the back of his head, it’s brilliant innovation from Gakpo. That’s a huge goal from a Netherlands team who really haven’t threatened in this second half.
“Mendy shouldn’t come, he gambles. Dreadful goalkeeping from Mendy, it really is.”
TBR View: Mendy would be a huge gamble for Spurs
Spurs will have big shoes to fill when they eventually replace Hugo Llloris and Mendy doesn’t seem to be that player right now.
He’s clearly struggling with confidence at the moment and is making far too many errors.
Mendy was superb during his first season with Chelsea but his form has dipped massively.
When Tottenham inevitably replace Lloris, they’d be better off going for a player who is at least playing at the top of his game, or a goalkeeper with brilliant potential.
