Report: Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho rejected Cetic during 11-month break

The Times have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur’s new manager Jose Mourinho turned down the chance to move to Celtic during his 11-month break, and has since replaced Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs.

Mourinho, 56, was sacked in December 2018 by Manchester United after the Portuguese gaffer was criticised for his negative style of play at Old Trafford. He has since been without a job, but that has all changed now – signing a deal until 2023.

But the former Chelsea boss was inundated with offers during his time out of the game. Indeed, the report claims Celtic offered Mourinho the chance to work in Scotland – likeliest when Brendan Rodgers left to join Leicester City.

It is also believed Mourinho was offered the chance to move to China with the National Team and indeed Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande. Monaco, Benfica and a return to Inter Milan have also been turned down by Mourinho.

TBR’s view – Would Mourinho have been a success at Celtic?

Without a doubt, Mourinho’s past of winning an enormous number of trophies would have seen the ex-Real Madrid manager continue where Brendan Rodgers had left. Certainly, Celtic would have achieved 10 in a row and maybe more.

However, it must be said that Neil Lennon is doing a superb job and has gone one step further than Rodgers – which is impressing in the Europa League. Indeed, Celtic have beaten Lazio twice this season and are already through to the knockout stages.
