Report: Tottenham make big decision on future of Ryan Sessegnon
Tottenham Hotspur have made a big decision on the future of Ryan Sessegnon, with The Times reporting that they have offered the defender a new contract.
Sessegnon has had a turbulent time with Spurs. He arrived in 2019 off the back of an amazing start to his career with Fulham. However, he was never quite able to establish himself in the side.
Several managers failed to find a place for Sessegnon, who has also struggled with injury. And he spent the majority of last season out on loan with Hoffenheim.
The performances of Sergio Reguilón this term meant that his game-time continued to be restricted. And there was an ominous sign in the recent loss to Wolves.
Tottenham found themselves 2-0 down inside 20 minutes against their top-four rivals after some calamitous defending.
Antonio Conte decided however, to take Sessegnon off after 28 minutes as he looked to change the game. Sessegnon had been responsible for neither goal Tottenham conceded.
However, since then, Sessegnon has continued to impress. He was ‘fantastic‘ against Manchester City in their stunning win at the Etihad Stadium. And he was sublime at Leeds on Saturday, setting up the opening goal.
The Times reports that his current contract – worth £55,000-a-week – expires in 2024. However, Tottenham have now offered Sessegnon a brand new deal.
Contract offer an exciting hint at what is to come from Sessegnon at Tottenham
It had appeared for some time that Sessegnon was destined to fail to live up to expectations at Tottenham. And this summer looked to be a key moment.
With two years remaining on his deal, Spurs may have previously considered letting him go. However, he is now a player Conte can count on.
The new contract highlights that Tottenham have high hopes for Sessegnon. His recent performances have provided an exciting glimpse of what is to come.
