Report: Tottenham lead race to sign Joachim Andersen, Arsenal also keen
Tottenham are in pole position to sign Lyon defender Joachim Andersen this summer, with North London rivals Arsenal also in the race, according to The Telegraph.
The Swedish centre-back suffered relegation with Fulham last night. An instant return to the Championship is almost certain to end the Cottagers’ hopes of landing him permanently.
Despite a season of struggle for Fulham, Andersen has been superb. Since checking in on loan he’s made 32 appearances for the club and has captained the side on several occasions.
Tottenham have been in the hunt for a new central defender for quite some time. Jose Mourinho waxed lyrical about the need for defensive reinforcements before his departure.
Even though the Portuguese boss has now been dismissed, Tottenham’s transfer priorities haven’t shifted – with a quality central defender right at the top of a summer wishlist.
Andersen is not thought to be considered for another chance at Lyon and as a result, could find his way back to the Premier League during the transfer window.
The Ligue 1 outfit want £20 million for the enforcer, although Tottenham might have to offload one of their current defenders first.
TBR View: Tottenham must beat Arsenal for Andersen
Spurs have been nothing short of hapless at the back this season and a centre-back is an absolute must this summer.
Arsenal have a plethora of talent to choose from at the back, although with David Luiz set to leave on a free, it’s easy to see why they have entered the race.
Signing a proven Premier League defender for such a small sum isn’t to be sniffed at and the interest doesn’t seem overly surprising.
Tottenham’s need for a defender is greater though and Daniel Levy has to act to sign the Lyon performer.
