Report: Tottenham want to sign 22-year-old central-defender who faces huge World Cup game today

Tottenham are keen to add Dinamo Zagreb defender Josip Sutalo to their ranks, according to Tutto Mercato Web. The centre-back is currently part of the Croatia squad at the World Cup in Qatar.

The 22-year-old is yet to play for his country in the tournament. He’s ready and waiting, however, and the experience of being part of the squad should benefit him going forward in his career.

Sutalo has been a regular in the team at Dinamo Zagreb during 2022/23. He’s played nine times in the league and also starred as the Croatian champions stunned Chelsea in the Champions League.

Naturally, that level of performance has started to catch the eye. Sutalo isn’t the only name under consideration by Antonio Conte but it looks likely that he’s firmly on the radar of the North Londoners.

Sutalo is a product of the academy at Zagreb. He did spend the second half of the 2020/21 campaign on loan with NK Istra but other than a 26-game stint there, he’s always been at the same club.

The central defender has made three appearances for the Croatia national team. Whether he gets a chance to play at the World Cup remains to be seen, although it could be a long shot with others ahead of him.

After the tournament, talk over his future could intensify. The reports right now seem to indicate that Tottenham are preparing to swoop for the player who has a contract with his current club until 2028.

Tottenham keen to add Zagreb defender Sutalo

It’s fair to say that Spurs would welcome another central defender. Eric Dier hit some patchy form before the break, whilst Cristian Romero has struggled to stay fit on a consistent basis in the past.

Sutalo looks like a useful player and crucially he’s got bags of potential. He would complement the team nicely and help Tottenham secure a player who could become a future star.

Antonio Conte will be keen to make sure his squad is well-stocked ahead of the second half of the season. Tottenham are in fourth place going into the World Cup break but they’re striving for consistency.

Sutalo looks like a promising player but signing him won’t be easy. That said, the player will have other clubs interested in him and Spurs will need to fight tooth and nail to bring him to the Premier League.
